New USGS Water Gauge on the North Branch
Have you noticed a new shiny metal box on the south railing of Kellogg Bridge? The U.S. Geological Survey installed a water gauge at the bridge last fall and the gauge is now fully operational for temperature and water height. USGS is taking field measurements of flow at the site and posting them, when available, to their web site. The Au Sable North Area Branch Foundation is partially funding the expense of the gauge and the field measurements so that we have a better understanding of the river and how external events affect it. Anglers of the Au Sable and Trout Unlimited are also participating in this effort. If you would like to see the data being generated, it is available at:
This is just one of the many projects aimed at increasing our knowledge of the river system so that we can sustainably manage the river and the wildlife that depend on it. Please check back for news about current and new projects on the North Branch.
